Shortly there after, one of the customers is moved to a pedicure chair, and the tech with the glasses begins on my manicure. She was speaking in her native language, so I can only assume she was checking to see what time another tech would be coming in. I then see the nail tech with the glasses get on the phone. There were already two customers being getting manicures by the two only nail techs, so I proceeded to take a seat. The nail tech with the glasses and the bob-like haircut said ok. Visited right at opening on Sunday, and explained that I wanted a manicure with clear polish/top coat. My advice to them: be polite, do work that you can be proud, and learn to take constructive criticism. Strike 3.In the end, I don't know if it was a language barrier, or this particular shop thinks it ok to do/say whatever they want, but they won't be getting another dime from me. I cut him off and let him know that he was being rude and should focus on the client in his chair. He then proceeds to tell me that it's not faster with the drying table and then tries to argue with me. Looking confused, I say ok, but FYI the drying table is something that younger people expect. At this point, the man/owner chimes in and says it's $10 extra for gel if you want your nails to dry faster. I then ask do you have a drying table with the fans (more than 1 fan) and UV lights? She says no and points to the fan. I then ask do you all service younger people (all of the other customers were older (50+) women? The nail tech says yes. She polishes my nails and ask me to sit them in front of a small fan for 5-10 minutes. Strike 2.Irritated at this point, I was asked to pay for my $12 mediocre manicure before polishing begins. She corrects the length, but the shape is still off. I get back to the chair and ask the nail tech to make the nails the same length and correct the shape. Remember the nail tech didn't speak to me much so she didn't ask/care how I wanted my nails shaped. Later on, I'm asked to wash my hands, and I notice my nails are different lengths and shapes. I'm like no, and she then dips my second hand into the water. The nail tech is like ok, and motions for me to enter my second hand into the water. After dipping my first hand into the bowl, I let her know the water was cold. The nail tech even brought out ice cold soapy water for my manicure. Two additional customers had walked in during my service, so I felt like the nail tech was neglecting me in order to service them. Strike 1.I felt like the whole experience was rushed. The nail tech barely spoke to me and never told me her name, although the nail tech did speak when the other nail tech, a man (who I think is the owner), finally arrived, she spoke to him in their native language.

That to-do list is further broken down into categories, including a list of things she wants to purchase accompanied by a “ Life Impact” column, in which she assigns a number to how much the item will improve her life. On her YouTube channel, lifestyle influencer Michelle Barnes, who works with Notion, shows how she has organized her Notion into an enormous “Life Dash” that includes her master to-do list. There are Notion influencers who make instructional videos. There are certified Notion consultants who work to help businesses and people organize their lives using the app. On massive Facebook groups, fans who identify as “Notioneers” trade templates they’ve built on the platform: customized tables like “Plants Manager” or “Pokémon Collection Tracker” that others can download. Enthusiastic Roam users call themselves the Roamcult, and the Obsidian Discord server has nearly 50,000 members. These platforms have fostered thriving subcultures of devotees. Srinivas Rao, an author and podcast host who uses Mem, once described the app as “the closest thing I’ve seen to being able to upload your brain to the internet.” “Our thinking is, If a thought can’t be retrieved, then it’s not a useful thought,” said Kevin Moody, the 26-year-old former Google employee who co-founded Mem, which recently raised $5.6 million in venture capital. Instead of tabs and folders, they allow us to sort our archives into customizable, easy-to-navigate tables - and, in the case of Mem and Obsidian, can even show us how one piece of information (say, your to-do list) is related to another (notes from a recent meeting). Like the filing cabinet for the pre-digital era, these apps are designed not only to store everything that our brains can’t hold - grocery lists, passwords, meditation schedules, work tasks - but also to make us better at retrieving the information in them. There is Roam Research, founded in 2017, and Obsidian, founded in 2020, and Mem, which is in public beta. They are sometimes referred to as “knowledge-management systems” or “personal-knowledge bases,” though many users refer to them as simply “second brains.” The best known is Notion, which was released in 2016 and has grown from 1 million to more than 20 million users in the past two years (and was recently valued at $10 billion). If a thought can’t be retrieved, then it’s not a useful thought.Īmid this flood of data, a new category of app has emerged, one that promises to collect all the digital material we generate into one single, seamless interface. But the contents of our digital memories have themselves grown unwieldy, fractured across multiple devices and accounts, impossible to process. By now, we may even rely on our devices’ memories so completely that we’ve lost our ability to recall things without them. This compendium of self-knowledge seems only to expand, prompting our devices to expand along with it: The first iPhone’s maximum storage space was 16 gigabytes, while the newest release offers a terabyte. I could tell you with a glance at my iPhone exactly where I was on October 24, 2015, or how many hours of sleep I got last night. We are constantly turning our lives into data, much of it nonphysical: photographs and screenshots and stray notes, reams of text messages and bookmarked tabs and other digital detritus. Nearly a century later, Moses’s anxiety has become our reality. Moses was wary of how filing cabinets externalized personal memory: What would be the consequences of trying to turn every aspect of your life into “information” to be hoarded for later? “You can’t expect yourself to say, when you give your wife the first kiss, ‘File that, my dear, for future reference,’ ” he wrote in 1930. Not everyone was happy with the invention. One 1918 advertisement described the filing cabinet as “oracle-like” with a “great gigantic memory”: “It is only a bit o’ steel, yet no brain was ever made / That could wholly supersede it with the busy business man.” The filing cabinet, then, was better than a human brain - it could hold and organize the entire contents of one’s professional and domestic life, broken down into discrete bits of information and made retrievable at will. As these archives ballooned, a new technology rose in popularity: the filing cabinet, whose history the scholar Craig Robertson documents in The Filing Cabinet: A Vertical History of Information. This “paperization” eventually spilled into the home, where a rise in personal documentation meant that houses were filling up with bills, letters, tax forms, receipts, birth certificates, recipes clipped from magazines. As American businesses expanded in both number and scale in the wake of the Civil War, so did their printed material there were graphs, memos, charts, forms, and more correspondence than ever. The 20th century brought with it a deluge of paper. He also mentions that all enduring religions AS WELL AS all enduring philosophical systems agree on certain principles of human maturity and interaction, and those are the principles he bases the book on. That takes up approximately 2 sentences in the entire book (though he says a little more in the afterword). He clearly states that he believes in God. Too religious? Irrational? Morality? What book are these people reading? Does the author mention religion? Yes. Chert has become catatonic in response to our sun’s imminent death. Apparently they’re much older than we realized. The stars are simply dying from old age. All of the stars in the universe are dying, including our sun. Chert has spotted an unusually high number of supernovae recently. Chert has set up their astronomy gear on the north pole of Ember Twin I recalled a Nomai shuttle from the Interloper. A huge cylindrical structure that generates a strong upward gravity field. The adult Nomai were delighted to see the children incorporate their research into the game’s rules. The blindfold rule was added because real anglerfish are blind. When the anglerfish said go, the littlefish had to sneak across to the other side. The rest of the children (the littlefish) lined up against one wall. One player was the anglerfish and wore a blindfold. Nomai children used to play a game here. According to a Nomai computer, our sun has reached the end of its natural life cycle. After the failure of the Sun Station, the Nomai took a break to investigate the newly arrived comet. They concluded that the Sun Station could never cause the sun to go supernova. The Nomai fired the Sun Station but it had no effect on the sun. The Sun Station was designed to make the sun go supernova. Make them landscape features that can also block off your garden from vermin. Turn your ugly plastic hose housing into something pretty. Cover up an unsightly HVAC system or garbage can area. It can replace a small portion of your preexisting fencing, but most commonly lattice fence panels are used as screens or small partitions. These are very handy since they can be installed in a variety of locations. Lattice fence panels are individual sections of fencing that are sold separately. If you don’t want your yard surrounded by a network of lathing, but you still want the versatility that lattice fences provide, then you may want to think on a smaller scale. Lattice Fence Panel: An Ornamental Alternative Intertwine some vines, flowers, or other plant life through the slats in order to create a small retreat around your perimeter. They add a unique aesthetic charm to your yard since the laths can be used as an impromptu trellis. However, the main reason homeowners install this specialized fencing is due to their decorative appeal. Plus, if you live somewhere scenic, it still allows for a view of the surrounding area without leaving you vulnerable to outside threats. So there’s plenty of privacy but less literal separation from your neighbors. Its slats are tightly woven so very little can penetrate it (including dogs, pests, and wandering eyes) and yet is also allows for sunlight to filter through, creating an airiness to the backyard. Therefore, if you like wood materials and want strong barriers around your yard, you may want to look into lattice fences. Wrought iron is unique and has an old-world charm, but they can be expensive, dangerous, and don’t offer much protection. Picket fences are always quaint, attractive, and more inviting, but they’re also short and don’t offer much privacy. However, if you don’t like the look of privacy fences, or if you simply think tall enclosures are too cold and restrictive, you may want to shop around for some alternatives. Respecting boundaries while creating privacy helps to erase most neighborhood conflicts, and it makes the community stronger. We’ve all heard the phrase, “Good fences make for good neighbors.” It’s true. On a Bond film, there’s always money available to keep production ticking over relatively smoothly. In a tight-budget film, one or two takes is maximum to get a scene right. This is the difference between a low budget film and one like a James Bond movie. “Not good enough, try it again”, said John Glen. When the scene was finally ready, and cameras in position, the clapperboard came down and James Bond threw himself under the train and rolled out again in true Bond style. So, obviously feeling satisfied, he decided to have a chat with the waiting technicians. Cubby Broccoli had appeared to make sure everything was running smoothly. The train was moved into position, the arc-lights were arranged to catch the action at its best, and everybody in the camera’s view was politely asked to move out of the way of the sightline of the camera. But Simmons, as stunt co-ordinator on the movie, was still in his caravan, possibly making last-minute planning preparations for some important big scenes later on in the day. Bob Simmons could easily have carried this scene off without looking any different nobody would have been any the wiser. The only similarity between Moore and the stuntman was the uniform and hair. Who was he? The villain’s stand-in? No, I should have guessed: it was Roger’s stunt double for the day. A shortish, slightly plump man with a light brown wig was present on set. The scene involved James Bond, as fit as ever, having to dive under a slow-moving train, to avoid being spotted by some German guards. While the cast involved in the morning filming were dining, a stunt scene was prepared for shooting, with Moore’s stuntman and a few of the co-stars in the background. In between takes, Roger and Cubby Broccoli (who had arrived earlier in a silver car to watch the day’s proceedings) played backgammon (yes, its true!). The dining room area was next door to the main cast and circus personnel caravans, which in turn were located in a field, with the leading lady-villain, the beautiful Maud Adams, and Bond star Roger Moore having the largest caravans. That was the morning over for cast and crew, and they all retired for dinner in the newly-erected dining room tents, laid back well out of view of the main set. The train station itself was notably old-fashioned and nineteenth century in design and look, and on the rail track stood two converted steam locomotives in West German disguise. In the background, behind some trees, was a dismantled circus tent, just showing the main poles and a couple of flags, and, in the other direction, were cleverly disguised storerooms. On the platform, level with the steam-engine’s passenger door, was the word ‘ROGER’ chalked on the ground so our clever agent knew where to stop, swing round and leap onto the train (a little touch of behind-the-scenes production which won’t be seen in the final film, of course).Īfter a few more takes, John Glen, obviously out for perfection, was satisfied. He began to look bored, having obviously done this small scene at least ten times. Roger Moore was dressed in a porter’s type of uniform, with the red circus emblem on the back just the same as the ‘Octopussy girls’. And I was there again, feeling very privileged. It was day no.2 of the main Unit filming at the Wansford Station site of the Nene Valley Railway. Bond (Roger Moore) began to board and unboard the train, talking and walking before the camera. The ‘Octopussy circus’ girls, all in identical white sweat shirts with their place of employment, ‘OCTOPUSSY’S CIRCUS’, prominently displayed on them, were on the other side of the footbridge. “CUT”, shouted John Glen, the director of Octopussy, “Another take, back in positions everybody”. Noticing it was clear, 007 lept like a cat on to the steam-train and quickly disappeared out of sight. James Bond, wearing an Octopussy circus jacket, walked calmly out from underneath the pedestrian railway bridge which ran over the main platforms at Karl-Marx-Stadt, with a large square wicker basket held in front of his face to hide his identity from the khaki-clad military guards. ‘On Location in Peterborough’, from: 007, vol.1, no.12, January, 1983. Here is a third set of extracts, with some extra comments restored from the original transcript. To help celebrate nearly 40 years of Octopussy, the late Roger Moore’s sixth adventure as James Bond, the JBIFC have been publishing some edited extracts from an on-set report we carried in 007 magazine back in January, 1983. The managers displayed a lack of interest in the well-being of both employees and members, rarely being available to address concerns or provide support. Communication was virtually non-existent, and when it did occur, it was often unclear and inconsistent. The management at Crunch Fitness was undeniably one of the most detrimental aspects of the job. It was a stagnant and unfulfilling experience. The absence of proper training and guidance made it challenging to develop new skills or enhance existing ones. The poor management and disarray within the workplace prevented any opportunities for personal or professional growth. Unfortunately, my time at Crunch Fitness did not offer any valuable learning experiences. The lack of proper equipment and maintenance further hampered productivity, making the work environment extremely frustrating. We were expected to handle numerous duties outside of our job description, including janitorial tasks and personal trainer responsibilities, which resulted in excessive workloads and minimal breaks. The management consistently failed to provide clear instructions or establish a structured routine, leaving employees overwhelmed and confused. I would only recommend this job to brand new trainers that need to gain in person experience that are willing to hustle to build rapport with their clientele.Ī typical day at Crunch Fitness was characterized by chaos and disorganization. The only benefit to this job is that you'll be able to start out building a clientele if you're a new trainer and can later go independent and have a clientele that will want to follow you because Crunch doesn't have a valid non-compete clause. I've watched coworkers get baited into working harder for a promotion they had already given to someone else. There is very little ability to advance unless you work yourself to your breaking point. Management sets very high sales goals/booking expectations for the trainers and often times don't hit their own goals. The pay isn't set so if one month you have more clients on vacation or have more cancellations not only do you have less hours to work that they won't fill with non session time (lead acquisition time, programming time, maintaining the gym tasks, etc.), but you also make less per hour. The sessions cost the client $90 an hour so you're not even making a third of the cost of the session. For consultation sessions you make minimum wage and a small commission (up to $10 I believe) if the client signs up and at my location you can make UP TO $28 an hour if you're working over 100 hours a month with clients. The pay is not equivalent to the work done. The company does not give you time to work on client programming on the clock but expects you to have a full program and nutrition plan for each client. You are expected to take work home with you as a trainer. |
